ISO VG 150, AGMA 4, SAE 40 Oil

Description

According to the AGMA chart, a chart which shows the relationship between the different testing methods (ISO VG, AGMA, SAE), ISO VG 150 oil may also be classified as an AGMA 4 and/or SAE 40 oil. In most applications, these oil classifications are interchangeable - however, it is wise to consider OEM specifications to determine which exact lubricant specification is to be used. These oils may be used in hydraulic applications, as general purpose R&O oils, bearing oils, and gear lubricants of both the standard and EP (extreme-pressure) variety.

ISO VG 150/SAE 40/AGMA 4 lubricants for industrial applications are often employed in gearboxes, hydraulics, food machinery, slideways, and some compressors.

ISO VG 150 oil has a midpoint kinematic viscosity of 150 mm2/s, also referred to as centistokes (cSt). The midpoint is derived by taking the average of both the minimum and maximum kinematic viscosities. In the case of ISO VG 150 oil, those numbers are 135 cSt and 165 cSt, respectively. SAE 40W oil has a minimum high-temperature kinematic viscosity of 12.5 mm2/s (cSt). AGMA 4 lubricants have a minimum viscosity of 135 mPa.s and a maximum viscosity of 165 mPa.s. These numbers refer to the standard testing mechanisms used to determine how much resistance to flow (i.e. viscosity) these oils demonstrate.
