NLGI 1


NLGI 1 grease is a soft lubricating grease with a worked penetration range of 310–340 at 25°C (77°F) under the NLGI consistency classification system. It is softer than the commonly used NLGI 2 grade, which can make Grade 1 grease useful in applications where easier movement, distribution, or pumpability is needed.

Petroleum Service Company carries NLGI 1 greases from brands including Mobil, Chevron, Phillips 66, Mystik, Gulf, AeroShell, and more, with options available for industrial equipment, bearings, heavy-duty machinery, aviation, and other manufacturer-specified applications. Products are available in multiple formulations and package sizes, from grease cartridges and cases to pails and drums.

The NLGI grade describes grease consistency, not overall performance. Two NLGI 1 greases can use different base oils, thickeners, viscosity grades, additive systems, temperature ranges, load-carrying properties, and OEM specifications. Always select a grease based on the complete equipment and lubricant requirements rather than NLGI grade alone.


NLGI 1 vs. NLGI 2 Grease

NLGI 1 grease is softer than NLGI 2. NLGI Grade 1 has a worked penetration range of 310–340, while NLGI Grade 2 falls between 265–295. A lower NLGI number indicates a softer grease.

That difference can affect how readily a grease pumps, flows, and redistributes within a lubrication system. The correct grade should always be based on the equipment manufacturer's recommendation and operating conditions.

When comparing Grade 1 greases, consider more than consistency. Important factors include:
