Sunoco 260 GT 100 Octane Unleaded Race Fuel

Oxygenated 100 Octane Fuel for High-Performance Street and Track Vehicles

Sunoco 260 GT is an oxygenated, unleaded 100 octane gasoline designed for high-performance street cars, muscle cars, classics, street rods, motorcycles, and other performance applications requiring greater knock resistance than typical pump gasoline.

With an Anti-Knock Index of 100 (R+M)/2, 260 GT can support increased boost in properly tuned supercharged and turbocharged applications compared with lower-octane pump fuel. It contains 9.8% ethanol by volume and has a stoichiometric air/fuel ratio of 14.1:1.

Sunoco 260 GT is street legal in most states, but it is not street legal in California or other areas that require California Air Resources Board compliant gasoline. Sunoco SS 100 is the comparable 100 octane option for California street use.

  • Shelf life exceeds one year when properly stored

100 Octane for Increased Knock Resistance

The primary reason to choose Sunoco 260 GT over conventional pump gasoline is its 100 octane Anti-Knock Index.

Higher-octane fuel provides greater resistance to detonation, or engine knock, under elevated cylinder pressures and temperatures. This can be useful in engines with:

  • Increased boost
  • Turbochargers
  • Superchargers
  • Higher compression ratios
  • Advanced ignition timing
  • Performance modifications that increase cylinder pressure

Sunoco specifically identifies 260 GT as capable of supporting increased boost levels in supercharged and turbocharged applications compared with typical lower-octane pump gasoline.

The correct fuel should always be selected according to the engine's octane requirement and calibration. Using more octane than an engine requires does not automatically produce additional power.

Oxygenated Fuel with 9.8% Ethanol

Sunoco 260 GT contains 9.8% ethanol by volume and approximately 3.7% oxygen by weight.

Its 14.1:1 stoichiometric air/fuel ratio is relatively close to common ethanol-containing pump gasoline, making 260 GT a more straightforward transition for many street-performance applications than high-ethanol racing fuels such as E85-R or E98.

Engine calibration should still be evaluated whenever switching fuels, particularly in modified engines where air/fuel ratio, ignition timing, boost, and fuel delivery have been optimized around a specific fuel.

Street and Track Applications

Sunoco 260 GT combines racing-fuel consistency and 100 octane knock resistance with street legality in most states.

Typical applications include:

  • High-performance street cars
  • Muscle cars
  • Classic cars
  • Street rods
  • Turbocharged vehicles
  • Supercharged vehicles
  • Performance motorcycles
  • Drag racing
  • Asphalt oval racing
  • Dirt oval racing
  • Road-course applications
  • Karts
  • Boats and personal watercraft
  • Nitrous, turbocharged and supercharged racing applications

Always confirm that 100 octane unleaded oxygenated gasoline is appropriate for the engine, fuel system, sanctioning body, and local regulations.

Catalytic Converter and Oxygen Sensor Compatibility

Sunoco 260 GT is unleaded and is compatible with catalytic converters and oxygen sensors.

This makes it better suited to many late-model performance vehicles than leaded racing fuels, which should not be used in vehicles equipped with catalytic converters or oxygen sensors.

The fuel also contains an additive package designed to provide engine protection and help reduce fuel-system deposits.

Carbureted and Fuel-Injected Engines

260 GT can be used in both carbureted and fuel-injected applications when the engine and fuel system are compatible with its specifications.

Because fuel properties such as specific gravity, oxygen content, volatility and stoichiometric air/fuel ratio affect fuel metering, verify calibration when switching from another racing fuel or significantly different gasoline.

Two-Stroke Compatibility

Sunoco 260 GT is compatible with both synthetic and mineral-based two-stroke engine oils.

Follow the engine and two-stroke oil manufacturer's recommended fuel-to-oil ratio for the specific application.

Street-Legal Status

Sunoco identifies 260 GT as street legal in most states.

It is not street legal in California and may not qualify for street use in other jurisdictions that require California Air Resources Board compliant gasoline.

For a California street-legal 100 octane Sunoco fuel, use Sunoco SS 100.

Local fuel regulations can change, so verify applicable requirements before using racing or performance fuel on public roads.

Storage and Shelf Life

Proper storage helps maintain the consistency of race fuel.

Store Sunoco 260 GT:

  • In an opaque container
  • In a tightly sealed fuel-compatible container
  • At a stable temperature
  • Away from direct sunlight
  • Away from excessive heat
  • With minimal exposure to outside air and moisture

When properly stored, Sunoco lists the shelf life of 260 GT at more than one year.
