Tectyl 511M Class II is a Qualified Product Listed (QPL) for Govt. Designation MIL-PRF-16173E; Class II, Grade 5 Certified Source, formulated to also fulfill the requirements of MIL-C-23411A, Type II and MIL-P-116J, Type P-21 Specifications.
Contrary to Class I, Class II indicates this product is lower in Volatile Organic Content/Compounds (VOC), not exceeding 2.8 lbs. per gallon (340 grams/liter).

Tectyl 511M Class II is a solvent-based, water-displacing wax corrosion inhibitor compound cutback with mineral spirits providing excellent long-lasting protection against corrosion for ferrous (iron-containing) and non-ferrous (no-iron) industrial parts and transportation components during covered shipment or indoor storage.
Tectyl 511M Class II will cure to a semi-firm, oily, and translucent amber rustproofing film offering useful penetration properties that will not stain your silver or silver-plated metals.

Formulated with superior water-displacement capabilities, this premium rustproofing film shields metal surfaces with a protective barrier that will displace water or saline solutions from corrodible surfaces avoiding corrosion-promoting conditions.
Tectyl 511M Class II is known to be have been utilized by the Navy to salvage the diesel engines on the Squalus submarine that sunk
in 243 feet of water off the Isles of Shoals in 1939. The corrosion preventive’s oily film coating effectively separated saltwater from the steel surface. The Navy still utilizes the product to this day for a wide range of corrosion prevention tasks.

Product Uses

  • Translucent, Amber, Water-Displacing Corrosion Preventive Compound that is recommended for corrosion protection where water or saline solutions must be displaced from corrodible metal/steel surfaces while in the manufacturing process, storage, or shipping.
  • Protects interior surfaces of machinery, industrial parts, and/or transportation components for limited periods.
  • Protects critical bare steel or phosphated surfaces for extended periods when packaged with satisfactory barrier materials.
  • Cummins specified preservative oil for diesel generators with HPI Fuel System that will be in storage or inactive without exercise for a period of 24-60 months.
  • Cummins specification states Tectyl 511M should be applied to the rocker levers, valve stems, springs, valve guides, crossheads, push rods, camshaft, and all unpainted exposed surfaces.
  • Class II Volatile Organic Content/Compounds (VOC) does not exceed 2.8 lbs. per gallon (340 grams/liter).
  • Do NOT spray Tectyl 511M Class II on the intake manifold or any fuel system components as this may permanently damage sensors or valves.
  • Spray Tectyl 511M Class II into the intake and exhaust ports in the cylinder heads and in the manifolds.
  • Removal can be done with a solvent-based thinner, vapor degreasing, hot alkaline wash, or low-pressure steam.

Product Performance:

  • When applied at the recommended wet film thickness (WFT) of 0.7 mils over the surface profile, it will deposit the recommended dry film thickness (DFT) of 0.4 mils.
  • Dry to touch in 1 hour and fully cured after 24 hours.
  • Covers 2,586 square ft. per gallon when applied at the recommended film thickness.
  • Can provide up to 2 months of outdoor protection and 1.5 years of indoor or undercover protection on metal substrates at the recommended dry film thickness.

Application Equipment Recommendations: 

  • Pumps with ratios of 15:1 or greater are advised for efficient use of container content.
  • Tungsten Carbide Nozzles Tip in the spray gun is recommended. (.011" to .015" tip orifice size)
  • High Pressure Fluid Hose of no less than 3/8 in. diameters is suggested for less than 50 ft. of material hose.
  • Low Ratio pumps (15-30:1): operate through 100 ft. of 1/2 in & 50 ft. of 3/8 in. hose for a max of 150 ft.
  • High Ratio pumps(>30:1): operate through 200 ft. of 1/2 in & 50 ft. of 3/8 in. hose for a max of 250 ft.
  • Can be brush or dip applied.
